TADA is the Belgian equivalent of the Dutch organization ‘IMC Weekendschool’. Both organizations are legally and financially independent, but there is some informal cooperation. TADA exists partly thanks to the expertise of ‘IMC Weekendschool’ and the good relationship between Sofie Foets en Heleen Terwijn, the respective founders of TADA and ‘IMC Weekendschool’.
Sofie Foets and Heleen Terwijn met in May 2011 in the European Parliament (EP), when Heleen Terwijn, as an expert, spoke at an EP conference on ‘Best Practices in Europe as regards to Informal Education for Disadvantaged Youth’. At that time, Sofie Foets was the policy assistant of the Dutch Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66).
TADA was launched in Sint-Joost-ten-Noode for the 2012-2013 school year. By now, approximately 150 pupils participate in TADA in Sint-Joost each Saturday. A first group of alumni finished the three-year curriculum in 2015.
Since 2015 TADA also exists in Anderlecht (Kuregem) and Molenbeek, where TADA equally provides a boost to the education authorities working in Brussels’ most challenging areas.
In 2017-2018 counts TADA 18 classes in total. Near to 630 children (alumni included) are taught each and every Saturday of the school year in French and Dutch by inspiring professionals who share their passion on a voluntary basis with the TADA children.
TADA’s sister organization ‘IMC Weekendschool’ was launched in 1998. It has in the meantime reached several thousand children from underprivileged communities. Since 2013, IMC Weekendschool has been experimenting with the introduction of weekend school education in some traditional schools.
TADA’s goals in Brussels are at least as ambitious. By 2020 TADA wants to launch several branches in the most disadvantaged Brussels neighborhoods in order to reach at least 1,000 Brussels youngsters as soon as possible: children who will complete the three-year program as well as TADA alumni who are supported by a follow-up trajectory.
